The origins of the term Jim Crow long predate the discriminatory social segregation of twentieth century America. Jim Crow was originally a character in 19th Century minustrel shows developed by Thomas Darmouth Rice, also known as 'Daddy' Rice. Rice's act and the song he made famous, Jump Jim Crow, depended heavily on racial stereotyping of African Americans. The term Jim Crow, from the late 19th Century became increasingly associated with these negative stereotypes. From the start of the twentieth century the term was also used to describe the various laws separated whites and blacks, particulary in the former slave holding states of America.
